How Do I Drain My Yanmar Tractor Fuel Tank?

We want to help you properly drain your Yanmar tractor fuel tank.


If you do not feel that you understand these steps, or can perform them safely, consult your tractor dealer or local mechanic.

Fire and Explosion Hazard:

  • Diesel fuel is flammable and explosive under certain conditions.

  • When you remove any fuel system component to perform maintenance (such as changing the fuel filter) place an approved container under the opening to catch the

  • Never use a shop rag to catch the fuel. Vapors from the rag are flammable and

  • Wipe up any spills

  • Wear eye protection. The fuel system is under pressure and fuel could spray out when you remove any fuel system

  • Failure to comply will result in death or serious injury.

Environmental Notice:

  • Always be environmentally responsible.

  • Follow the guidelines of the EPA or other governmental agencies for the proper disposal of hazardous materials such as engine oil, diesel fuel and engine coolant.

  • Consult the local authorities or reclamation

  • Never dispose of hazardous materials irresponsibly by dumping them into a sewer, on the ground, or into groundwater or

  • Failure to follow these procedures may seriously harm the

Draining the Tractor Fuel Tank:


Note that a typical fuel tank is illustrated.


1. Position an approved container under the diesel fuel tank (Figure 5-8, (1)) to collect the contaminates.


2. Remove the fuel cap (Figure 5-8, (3)).

3. Remove the drain plug (Figure 5-8, (2)) of the fuel tank to drain the contaminates (water, dirt, etc.) from the bottom of the tank.

4. Drain the tank until clean diesel fuel with no water or dirt flows out. Reinstall and tighten the drain plug firmly.

5. Reinstall the fuel cap.

6. Check for fuel leaks.
