How Do I Select the Right Tractor?

We want to help you select the perfect tractor for your needs and budget.

Your goals should include finding a tractor that runs great, has the right power, is comfortable to use, and well within your budget.

Finding the right tractor will also help you yield the most profit from your farm.

Let’s consider the selection process from six angles.

PRICE

While there are many considerations --- price ranks near the top. It is important.

Of course, there’s a balance to think about. You want to buy a tractor that will get the job done while keeping your budget in line.

Be sure to investigate prices carefully. Also, make sure the tractor has all the features and amenities you need and want. One key is to buy good quality, so your tractor runs well, lasts longer, and has a better resale value.

There are many great cash deals and financing options, depending on what you are looking for.

SERVICE

All tractors require repairs and routine maintenance. You will also likely experience breakdowns at the worst possible time. This requires planning up front.

Make sure that you can service your tractor locally. The local service center should also have parts readily available.

You will want to be as close as possible to your local service center, to limit equipment downtime, and for easy transportation.

Some service centers even offer mobile repair and pickup/delivery. Ask your service center about these possible options.

AREA

The size of your land will help you determine what size tractor you need.

If you have a large area of land --- you will need a more powerful machine and attachments to handle the workload. Land containing hard soil also requires a more powerful tractor.

Keep in mind that smaller tractors have far less power and limited features. They are better suited for smaller areas of land, with fewer work requirements.

REQUIREMENTS

It is important to know what you need your tractor to do --- the work requirements.

While the point of this short article does not include listing everything a tractor can do --- you should simply list everything the tractor is going to be doing --- and making sure your tractor is the right size/power and can utilize the necessary attachments.

Your local dealer can help you select a tractor.

COMFORT

Comfort is very important.

You may find yourself driving and operating your tractor for long hours. So, make it as pleasant as possible.

Never overlook the fact that you may be using your tractor for long hours daily. If you are not comfortable, you may be miserable.

Take the tractor for a test run and make sure it is comfortable to drive and use. Also, make sure it has all your required amenities.

RESALE

This is a consideration that many buyers tend to overlook.

It is important to know the approximate resale value of your tractor.

With constant use, upgrades, and changing needs, there is a good chance you will be trading in or selling your tractor.

So, if you are spending a certain amount of money time after time, you should have an idea of the resale value. It does not matter if the tractor is new or used. Either way --- know your approximate resale value.
